About Us

Established in 2009, Fernandes Maritime Consultants (FMC) is a marine surveying, consulting, engineering and auditing company based in the USA. With offices in New Orleans (Louisiana), Houston (Texas) and Mobile (Alabama), FMC provides services to clients along the US Gulf, the wider North and South American continents, and the Caribbean.

FMC has long been a trusted partner to P&I clubs, insurance and legal services providers, as well as ship owners and managers. The company is well-known for the consistent quality and effectiveness of its services, having successfully dealt with particularly challenging cases in more than a decade of existence – a result of the multidisciplinary and experienced team of surveyors and consultants employed by the company.

Managing Director

Capt. Sanjeev Kumar Gupta

Capt. Gupta has more than 15 years of experience in the maritime industry, including almost a decade of sailing experience on tankers, particularly VLCCs and Aframaxes.

His areas of specialization include:

  • Investigations into collisions, groundings, fire casualties, and forensic analysis
  • Hull and machinery damage and repair surveys
  • Personal injury and dock damage surveys
  • Liquid, gas and solid cargo surveys
  • SIRE inspections and pre-vetting audits as per OCIMF standards
  • CDI Chemical and CDI Gas internal and pre-vetting audits
  • Vetting, condition, loss control, dry-docking and pre-purchase surveys
  • Safety, pollution and environment compliance.
  • ISM, ISPS, ISO 9001, 14001, 18001, and QHSE audits.
  • Risk assessment, risk matrix evaluation and STOP (Safety Training Observation Program) assessment.
  • Implementation of pollution prevention as per SOPEP, SMPEP, VRP standards, compliance with USCG and CFR requirements.

Capt. Gupta holds a degree in Nautical Sciences from Mumbai University (India), while being an IRCA certified lead auditor for Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2008 with Lloyd’s Register) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2004 with DNV-GL). He is also a DNV-GL certified ISM and ISPS internal auditor, as well as an FAA certified drone pilot.

Prior to his commercial maritime career, Capt. Gupta served as a Navigation, Communications and Weapons Officer for the Indian Navy (Submarine Arm), having graduated from India’s National Defence Academy.

Capt. Vitalus Kurjanovics

Capt. Kurjanovics has close to 30 years of experience in the maritime industry, including two decades of sailing experience as a Captain on LNG and LPG vessels, with notable ship management companies such as Teekay, BSM, Thenamaris, Maersk and V Ships.

Capt. Kurjanovics holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Navigation from the Riga Marine College (Latvia), as well as an Unlimited Master’s License.

Jason Fernandes

Mr. Fernandes has more than four decades of experience in the maritime industry, including a decade of sailing experience on bulk carriers and tankers, across multiple engineering ranks.

In his more than 30 years as a surveyor and consultant, Mr. Fernandes has specialised in:

  • Inspections of hull and machinery damages
  • Supervision of repairs and verification of costs
  • Forensic engineering
  • Failure analysis
  • Deposition testimony and court testimony as an expert
  • Risk assessments, vessel vetting and condition surveys
  • Personal injury investigations
  • Liquid and solid cargoes damage inspections, loss mitigation and verification

Mr. Fernandes holds a postgraduate degree in Maritime Management from the Maine Maritime Academy and a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Madras Central Polytechnic (India). He is also a holder of a Chief Engineer’s Certificate of Competency (Motor), issued by the UK government.

Gurcharan Sachdeva (Ch. Eng.)

Mr. Sachdeva has more than 45 years of experience in the maritime industry, with more than a decade of sailing experience across multiple engineering ranks, including six years as a Chief Engineer. He has experience serving on various types of vessels, including general cargo, bulk carriers and tankers.

Over the last thirty years, Mr. Sachdeva held executive positions with global shipmangement companies such as V Ships, BSM, Wallem, Univan, based out of key maritime hubs across the world.

  • Oil Major pre-vetting and audits
  • Safety, Quality and Environmental (SQE) policy audits

Mr. Sachdeva holds a degree in Marine Engineering from the Jadavpur University (India) and a first-class Chief Engineer’s Certificate of Competency (Motor). He is also a registered Chartered Engineer in the UK.
